they're actually called the humbug spires... and we were on the Wedge. it was a four and a half mile hike in to the campsite; which was on BLM land and by an old worn down miner's cabin within a small meadow. pete and i hiked in after dark on saturday night with a "load" of gear. upon arriving i went to bed, tired and worn out. the morning was welcome and after a quick breakfast we packed grabbed our gear and guide book and went to the climbing area. we found the southwest face route and started our four/five pitch ascent. pete lead, and i cleaned. it ended up being a four pitched tough but good summit. once you got used to there being no real hand or foot holds only pits and partical places to hold things became better.... but it was good, fun, and a long climb. very nice. and so was the great view from the top of six hundred foot spire. after rappelling down and down climbing some pretty sketchy rocks, trees and gravel the hike out was nice. we ate a huge dinner of Vigo beans and rice (heck yeah) then enjoyed our smuggled in cold brew. and bed... morning was slow to arrive since being sore and tired made sleep hard. after breakfast packing and a good challenging hike out to the car, a fudge bar on the way home was quite enjoyable but not as enjoyable as a soak in the tub. it was a great trip.
next weekend ......?
stay tuned.
Cheers Pete & Nicole
