After a whole summer of telling Elinor to not pick the green ones, to wait for them to turn red, Elinor woke up this morning to a table full of green tomatoes.
We were blighted. in a bad way. From the rainstorm on Thursday, until Tuesday afternoon, I didn't look at the garden once... too busy with the Wooden Boat Festival. Tuesday while playing with Elinor on her bed (see them in the pre-festival picture?), looked out the window and BAM! the tomatoes had turned! NOOOOOOO. Having never experienced "Blight" before, we researched it online and salvaged what we could.
one slight vinegar coldwater bath later, the tomatoes are sitting on the table waiting to ripen... all while teasing Elinor.
She will be devastated when she goes out to the garden next and sees there aren't any more tomatoes.
Alas, we have a great garden everywhere else! We still have brussel sprouts, pumpkin, squash, sweet peppers, jalafuego, carrots, red and white onion, peas, broccoli, more carrots, radishes, green bush beans, kale mix, zucchini, baby tomato (in another area- just started itself midway through summer), mystery plant (squash or watermelon or pumpkin?) then of course our hops, apple tree, strawberries and herbs out front. Thinking about adding a garlic and onion patch this fall. Just need to find some time. Ha ha.
Dad caught me "red handed". -she can put them on herself-
Give Nicole a call to set up a night to see Elinor while we're in MN "next" week.
