LCI for LAB

Nicole is now a LCI for LAB!

Yippee!!

I am now a League Certified Instructor (LCI) for the League of American Bicyclists.

The first weekend of May, I set out to Seattle for a twenty-hour intensive course. It started at 5pm on Friday and went until 9pm. On Saturday we started bright and early at 8am and went until 9:30pm. On Sunday, there was no rest for the weary since we started promptly at 8am with our demonstration exams and on the road exams; made it back to the classroom for final paperwork and ended at 3pm on Sunday.

My whole ordeal started at around noon on Friday when Jim and Halsey drove me to Bainbridge Island so that I could catch the ferry. I biked onto the ferry then connected up with the BirkeGileman Trail system as I made my way north to Sandpoint Road. The class was being offered through Cascade Bicycle Club so everything happened there. Some how on my way, I “zigged instead of zagged” and ended up in the wrong area. I called my Seattle friend Charlie, who I was staying with that weekend, and he quickly came to pick me up so I could make it to class only a little bit late rather than very late. ! silly me. I had much to study that evening after class even though I was ready for sleep. I talked with Pete on the phone for forty-five minutes then went to bed.

Saturday morning rolled around very early as well, and breakfast with Charlie proved to be wonderful and a nice mental break from class or by myself. That day was super intense and full of learning how to teach as well as practicing teaching, as well as learning what standards we’d be held to as an LCI. That evening was late. No phone call to Pete! Only an hour’s worth of studying for my teaching modules.

On Sunday I showered, prepped for class, ate breakfast and arrived ten minutes early so that I could mentally get pumped for my exams. They all went well, and so did everyone elses. The day started out tense, but slowly evolved into a very relaxedprogression of what we needed to be demonstrating and passing. Long story short, I’m glad Sunday is over! We had our lunch break and then met up for final paperwork, and “exit interview”. We took our group photo and then were sent out onto the world to spread the love of safe bicycling to everyone!

I biked back to Charlie’s, grabbed my stuff and he biked me to the Kingston/Edmonds ferry, where I biked on, met Pete on the other side for dinner and then we made it back home by 8pm. It was great to be home and yet great to have gone for the weekend to get my Certification. I look forward to working with the two other LCIs in Port Townsend, to get some local programming done. I have a meeting with David on Wednesday to talk about my ideas and my tentative timeline. Yahoo!

Congratulations to me!
