Up in the Sticks

Here we are in Juneau Alaska... enjoying another great foggy morning where its snowing. Pete and I are getting along well with brother Dan and friend from Mn Mitch.

Here is the low down of our visit so far. Arrived on Tuesday night by a long and slow day of airplane riding. Dan picked us up and we went back to his place had a beer and settled into the futon in the livingroom after meeting his roommate Eric.

The next morning pete and i slept in and then wandered around until needing to pick up Mitch at one pm. after snagging Mitch, we found Dan's work and went out to a late lunch and then watched a movie/rested until Dan got home from work. That night we went out for a late dinner and packed for our three day trip.

Thursday morning we left for our stay at the National Forest Dan Moller cabin. We snow-shoed the twoish miles in and then played around in the mountains! Here is a brief low down of our runs: off to the left of the cabin we dug a snowpit and did our initial first run. Second up the ridge west of the cabin (which laid in a snowshoe pack which we happened to use several times). Third run was on three snowmachines- we were almost ready for bed and they zipped us up the southwest face dropping into a bowl then down to the cabin- all by headlamp... since it was too hard to pass up a free run. Fourth run was wandering our way up on Mt. Troy. we didnt' fully make it to the top but pretty close. that run led us down into some trees and gullies but the snow still was deep. after a little snack pete and i went up on the west ridge but further to the south down another set of sweet chutes. then our buddies joined us and we did a similar run right afterwards. then it was the end of the day. Dan's girlfriend Sabrina showed up and we played cards (old maid, kings in the corner, crazie eights and war) and drank some boxed wine.

Our final morning, Mitch, pete and i went up the epic hike to a south facing slope in wind and nearly white out conditions -which were pretty fun to be in!- and had our last run of the trip on some deep deep powder. we packed our packs and then boarded down to the truck with gear on our backs in the snow that turned to rain and mush. we made it to the house, did some laundry and dried our clothes, and kicked back for the rest of our day- hot tub included.
